from transfer and there is some side to side weaving on two rolls; a K40 and an Ektachrome. Both were on a tripod. The weave began after about 10-15 seconds on the K40 and would come and go on the Ektachrome. The other two rolls, a K40 and a V200T appeared okay, but they were both hand held so I guess I can't be 100% sure. Do you all think this is the camera or the film? Anyone else experience this problem? The camera was a Canon 814 XL-S.

I would put my money on the transfer.
I have had the same experience with my Rank transferred films.

There is no sign of this problem when the films are projected but on the transferred ones are.
    I usee the Canon 1014 XL-S.

The sideways instability in Rank transfers has been described earlier if I remember correctly by Roger Evans/Moviestuff.

I noticed it on the Rank the transfers from PRO8mm,

The camera film gate has 2 sideways guides supported by a spring force so unlesss omeone has dameged them it is not the camera. You may check those to be sure.
However, projection will give the answer anyway.

I'm hoping it is the transfer. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a projector right now to view the film for a comparison. What causes the side to side movement in a transfer? How about the camera?

Thanks for the response. I'm trying to get my hands on a projector to check the film out for myself. Okay, let's say it is the transfer. If you ask them to do it again will they be able to fix it? Will they charge you for another transfer session?

I have never had this happen when I have Rank transfered film.

However, one way around it is to go to a more current technology like a Spirit. They won't have "Weave" because of the way the machine scans the film and then stabilises.

    Good Luck

If it is the camera can it be fixed? Or will the cost of fixing it be about the same as buying another one? I suppose the only way to tell is shoot a few more rolls and see if the problem shows up again.

I have never experienced exteme weave in my Rank transfers. Super 8 is not rock steady, there will be weaving. To blame it on the Rank machine is a bit harsh. Let's see, would it be the $300-$500 camera that was originally designed for the home movie market? Or the $50,000 well maintain Rank transfer machine that was designed for and used
    by professionals?
